COLOMBO(News 1st) – JVP Parliamentarian Sunil Handunetti expressed these views on the rising price of rice at a media briefing today.
JVP MP Suni Handunetti noted that small retailers are being fined and taken to courts for selling rice for a higher price. He added that it is not their fault as they are forced to sell for a higher price as they have to purchase for a similar price from the wholesale dealers.
He added that on the other hand the wholesalers are manipulating the prices offered by the mills and they are the culprits of the mafia. He added that there are only two individuals pulling strings behind the scene and they could be easily ascertained by entering a grocery store and checking the cover of a rice pack.
He added that they should be sued as there is no shortage of rice and actually there is an abundance of rice in the country which could be supplied to the whole North Central Province.
“Two politicians with political patronage are using their political power to exploit the capacity they have. If the President has the genuine intention to end the mafia, he can do it with a stroke of his pen” MP concluded.
