It is probably one of the underrated gems of Bollywood. The mid-80s release Chameli ki Shaadi, starring Amrita Singh and Anil Kapoor in the lead, was a moderate success when it hit the screens back then but it has acquired quite a fan following among Bollywood fans for its charming and simple story-telling and a fantastic performance by Amrita Singh. Amrita, playing a loudmouth, small town girl who has a mind of her own, was a hoot. Even now, this little film never fails to entertain when it is aired on satellite television.
Now comes the news that Amrita’s daughter Sara Ali Khan may reprise her mum’s iconic role in a new film. Not much details is known about the project but rumours are strong that a remake is being considered of this film. Sara, who has rapidly risen to the ranks of a the top entertainers in Bollywood, will no doubt face a formidable challenge if she were to accept it and if the project is going ahead.
However, is Sara the right person for the role? Or should it be made again at all? It would be disastrous for Amrita’s daughter Sara to do a remake of her mother’s famous character. Sara should not even go anywhere near Chameli Ki Shaadi. It would be like Twinkle Khanna re-doing her mother Dimple’s Bobby, or Soha Ali Khan in a new-age version of her gorgeous mom SharmilaTagore’s Amar Prem. Or Mala Sinha’s daughter Pratibha encoring her mother’s Dhool Ka Phool.
Even the thought of Sara doing Chameli Ki Shaadi is scary. The comparisons between the two versions of the same film would be pretty much in the mother’s favour, no matter how effectively Sara is able to rehabiliate her mother’s world. Sara has just begun her career. Her first two films, Kedarnath and Simmba reveal her to be natural-born camera-friendly vivacious and spontaneous. However, her peformance in the recent Love Aaj Kal opposite Kartik Aaryan was criticised. She’s no Amrita Singh. Not yet. So let’s not push it.
