Travel search engine Kayak.com.au has announced the results of its inaugural Travel Awards, with Japan Airlines taking out the Best Airline title.

With six categories, the awards give recognition to the airlines leading the industry, with results based on consumer reviews collected by Kayak and its partners.

Japan Airlines was the star, taking out first place in an impressive five out of six categories, winning Best Airline Food, Best Airline Entertainment, Best Airline Comfort and Best Airline Boarding.

Adding to Japan’s takings, All Nippon Airways (ANA) ranked first for Best Crew, and second for the remaining categories.

As the country’s national carrier, Japan Airlines is renowned for its fine dining, award-winning seats and signature omotenashi-style approach to customer service.

“Crew was attentive, food tasted great, the whole experience wasn’t anything like the American style companies that try to shake you down for every penny and still get ripped off,” one happy customer wrote in a recent review on Kayak.

Despite the rave reviews on Kayak, Japan Airlines didn’t manage crack the top 10 in the more established Skytrax World Airline Awards this year, although it did take out the best economy gong in those awards. It ranked at only 10th in the world in AirlineRatings.com’s annual awards for 2019, and fifth according to TripAdvisor’s 2019 airline rankings.

Asian airlines dominated the Kayak awards, with Qantas the only Australian airline to place in Kayak’s results, scoring eighth for Best Airline Entertainment, ninth for Best Airline Boarding, and 10th for Best Airline Crew.

Air New Zealand ranked a little higher, scoring seventh place in the Best Overall Airlines category.
