COLOMBO (News 1st) – UPFA MP Wimal Weerawansa expressed these views during an event held in Colombo today(April 07) regarding Millennium Challenge Corporation.

UPFA MP, Wimal Weerawansa noted that when the current government came into power they made it legally possible for foreigners to purchase Sri Lankan lands. Consequently, they amended the Foreign Exchange Act enabling any foreigner to bring in and take out any amount of money without the scrutinization of the Central Bank. He noted that without Central Bank’s intervention into the flow of money Sri Lanka became a centre for money laundering.

He also noted that the government has gazetted the Land Grants (Special Provisions) Act even without the knowledge of the President. The President noted that it was not approved by the cabinet. Wimal Weerawansa noted that when the President checked with the Lands Ministry, the secretary informed the President that Prime Minister had instructed it to be gazetted and the President’s amendments to be added at the committee stage.

Wimal Weerawansa noted that PM is keen to gazette this act as he looks forward to reaching an agreement with an American corporation named Millenium Challenge Corporation by the end of the month. He added that those who arrive in Sri Lanka under Millenium Challenge Corporation will only be subject to international law, rendering Sri Lankan law ineffective against them.
