Major banks in the country allow their customers to make a certain number of transactions free of cost at ATMs every month. The customers are charged for transactions at ATMs over and above these mandated numbers of free transactions, as directed by country’s largest lender Reserve Bank of India (RBI). The number of free transactions at ATMs in a month depends on factors such as location of ATM – metro or non-metro – and the owner of ATM – whether it is owned by the home bank or any other bank. Additionally, banks also charge customers for issuance and annual maintenance of an ATM-cum-debit card.
